SARDONIKA (SPINews) -- At last week's Global Linguistics Seminar sponsored by the Sardonika Policy Institute, a lively discussion "Singular versus Plural?" was recorded in the opening session.
A partial transcipt:
Panelist One: Articles of clothing that cover the lower body -- why are those words always plural?
Panelist Two: Examples?
PO: Pants, shorts, trousers, slacks, jeans.
PT: Because people have two legs.
PO: People have two arms but they don't wear a pair of shirts.
PT: They wear a pair of gloves.
PO: Or one glove like Michael Jackson -- but they can't wear one pant .
PT: If I were a snake I'd wear a pant.
PO: You'd wear a tube sock ... and sleep on a rock.
In subsequent sessions, each panelist was required to wear a unitard.
