SARDONIKA (SPINews) -- Readers have long figured that the "banana fish" the late author J.D. Salinger wrote about in "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" was, like the unicorn and Winnie-the-Pooh, a literary myth.
Until yesterday, that is.
Twelve-year-old Elmora James, reeled in this bashful critter off the island's west shore. As proof, she took several pictures. Elmora said she was after sole, but is thrilled at becoming a literary "myth buster."
She hasn't decided what to do with her prize. "I mean, what's it taste like? Bananas? Yuck!"
Nor has she read any of Mr. Salinger's work, including "Nine Stories" in which these yellow fish swim. "I'm waiting a couple of years," she said, "then I'll read 'Catcher in the Rye' like everyone else does when they turn 15."
She paused for a moment. "Does Holden Caulfield really say 'fuck' that much? I mean my dad says that all the time.
"I guess that was like a big deal way back then."
